2009 Audi S3

Audi Press Release
4 March 2008

Dynamic, sporty and sophisticated, the Audi S3 boasting 195 kW (265 hp) and quattro permanent all-wheel drive is the top-of-the-range version of the A3 line. It redefines the standards of its class – at the level of a sports car. The sprint from zero to 100 km/h (0 to 62.14 mph) is over in a mere 5.7 seconds, and the electronic limiter only takes effect at 250 km/h (155.34 mph) – the two-litre TFSI with direct injection and turbocharger is a high-performance powerplant. Its power is transferred to 18-inch wheels by the six-speed transmission and quattro permanent all-wheel drive.

Design and interior
The high dynamic potential of this three-door sports car is obvious at first glance. The single-frame front grill is chrome covered, the front apron has a spoiler with large air intakes. The side sills are redefined, and the outside mirrors in new aluminium look and a colour-matched roof spoiler add additional accents. The rear apron has a diffusor and two integrated oval tailpipes.

The interior conveys an atmosphere of sportiness, with materials of the highest quality and a meticulous craftsmanship. The sport seats have a firm side support and are upholstered in a combination of cloth and leather or, as an option, in Alcantara/leather or completely in leather. The two-colour leather seats have seams in the colour of the seat center portion. The headliner is black or optionally silver; the instrument cluster has the typical S dials and needles. The pedals, gear knob and air vents are in aluminium, the inlays are in black lacquer finish, or alternatively in aluminium or fine grain birch veneer.

Drivetrain
The powerplant of the S3 delivers all that is expected of a powerful sports engine. The 2.0 TFSI, developed by Audi, combines the technologies of direct injection and turbocharging and delivering 195 kW (265 hp) at 6,000 rpm. Already at 2,500 rpm, it turns the crank with an awesome 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft) – a torque which remains constant up to 5,000 rpm. Under normal driving conditions the four-cylinder unit has fuel consumption of 9.1 litres per 100 kilometres (25.85 mpg) – proof of the leading-edge efficiency of the TFSI technology.

Compared to the A3, this engine represents a fundamentally re-designed improvement. The new turbocharger with its enlarged turbine and compressor rotors generates up to 1.2 bar of boost pressure. A modified intercooler significantly lowers the temperature of the compressed air, thus increasing the mass of the air needed for combustion. High-pressure injectors with an enlarged cross-section introduce the fuel straight into the combustion chamber.

The high-performance TFSI engine features pistons with stronger pins, while strengthened connecting rods with new bearings transmit the high forces to the crankshaft. The cylinder block has been reinforced, and the head is made of a new, highly heat-resistant alloy. The exhaust camshaft timing has been adjusted to accommodate the increased power output. For all its progressive technology, the high-performance turbo engine tips the scales at just 152 kg (335.10 lb), less than comparable engines of direct competitors – which has a positive impact on the axle load distribution.

The Audi S3 has manual six-speed transmission with a tight sequence of speeds and shortened shift motion. As is the case for all Audi S models, the new S3 drives all four wheels by means of quattro permanent all-wheel drive. An electronically controlled hydraulic multi-plate clutch, positioned at the rear for improved weight balance, distributes the torque as needed, delivering plenty of grip and maximum driving safety. All drivetrain components have been reinforced.

Chassis
In terms of handling, the Audi S3 exhibits all the qualities of a high-performance sports car; it responds immediately to steering movements and achieves high cornering speeds. The A3 suspension system, already offering excellent handling with its aluminium sub-frames front and rear, triangulated lower wishbones at the front and a four-link suspension at the rear, was further refined.

The springs and shock absorbers are firmer, and the S3 sits nearly one inch lower than an A3 with standard suspension. The pivot bearings and wishbones made from aluminium reduce the unsprung weight, further enhancing dynamic response and comfort. Stiffer suspension mounts and a sportier characteristic for the electromechanical steering provide even greater precision. 18-inch alloy wheels and 225/40 tires ensure a firm grip on the road surface. A 17-inch brake system with sports brake pads ensures forceful deceleration; the black painted front callipers bear S3 emblems.

Equipment
The S3 standard equipment includes a deluxe climate control system, a driver information system with integral stopwatch for taking lap times, as well as an anti-theft warning system. Front fog lights and xenon plus headlights with daytime running lights emphasise the exclusive appearance of this compact high-performance vehicle.

The extras also include sporty features like a leather steering wheel with flat-bottomed rim and – in the quattro GmbH range – folding bucket seats.

On the infotainment side, Audi is presenting audio systems featuring universal interfaces for mobile phones and iPod music players, as well as a Bose sound system with eight high-performance speakers. The colours Imola Yellow and Solar Orange are exclusively available for the S3.

Performance and fuel consumption: 0 – 100 km/h (0 – 62.14 mph) in 5.7 s, top speed 250 km/h (155.34 mph, governed), consumption (combined) 9.1 litres/100 km (25.85 mpg) with Super Plus gasoline.
